Metcalfe was born in Carmel Valley, California, the son of Nancy (née DeMaio) and Jeff Metcalfe. Metcalfe played in several basketball leagues during his teen years in Waterford, Connecticut and graduated from The Williams School in New London, Connecticut. Metcalfe made brief appearances in later seasons. in January 2005, after just nearly two months, Metcalfe expressed the difficulty juggling two major roles on a daytime and primetime, with the overwhelming work schedule. in February 2005, Metcalfe announced that he would not be returning to Passions and that he would be continue the role as John on Desperate Housewives on a full-time basis.
